New Season

A brand new season of Cricket is in store and I reckon we have two great series coming up. India Vs Australia and the Ashes series. This is a season which would prove whether this Indian team is an all time great or it just had few great seasons and some fantastic victories. Are the current set of the players, some of whom are the core of the team, are well and truly 'GREATS' ?

I am impressed with the rise of English Cricket and I believe, it truly deserves it's current ranking in the ICC Test ranking. English Cricket has slowly but surely in small single steps has been on the rise. Their performance is evenly spread over five years and they have been doing the fundamentals correctly, taking things one at a time. They have beaten Pakistan in Pakistan, beat Sri Lanka in Sri Lanka, ( although lost the most recent one, Murali's doosra was largely the reason), drew with India in India ( It ain't easy to beat India in India), drew with India at home, beaten NZ at home and away, drew with SA at home, and most importantly beaten their nemesis and old foe, Windies twice, and on the verge of beating them for the third time.

Recent success is against a very depleted, weak Windies, nevertheless they would draws immense confidence from beating them as Windies had really beaten and bruised them over the years. Also they have drawn the series with SA and India, not really beaten them, yet I believe they they have done better than India and SA. No doubt the top teams today to challenge Australia are India, England and SA with England having an edge over the other two challengers.

Now coming to India, our success has been winning Tests outside India, not really winning the series. I for one, believed that we didn't really do well in the Test Series in Pakistan. We should have won 3-0 not 2-1, considering the context in which the series was played and the immense pressure the Paksitani's go through in a home series and avarious other reasons, which I am not going to discuss here. We have done well by drawing the series in Australia, but that's about it. Our success in Test Cricket, is uneven and inconsistent to say the least. We have underperfomed. We shouldn't have lost the Series in Windies or in SL. We should have won the Series in Australia and should have made 3-0 in Pak.

All this is not wishful thinking.

We have been on top on all the occassion and somehow have allowed the opponents to get back in the Series. Among the challengers to Aussies, this is the single most difference between Eng and SA one side and India on the other hand.

I believe Australia would beat India in India this time around and England will well and truly challenge Australia. SA I guess would remain in periphery. I am somehow not very optimistic of India and am very cautious about our Team. More on that in the next post.
